Donum Dei - The Gift of God

Donum Dei is a ministry of Spirit of Life Church addressing the sin of abortion through public preaching, biblical witness, and gospel proclamation.

The name Donum Dei means “Gift of God”, reflecting the truth that every child is created by God, known by God, and precious before God.

John Owen, writing in Indwelling Sin, spoke powerfully about the unnatural violence of abortion. He argued that even animals instinctively love, protect, and nourish their young, often at great cost to themselves. Yet the power of sin in man is so deep that it can suppress even this natural affection and lead people to destroy “the fruit of their own loins.”

Owen connects this to Paul’s description of fallen humanity as being “without natural affection” (Romans 1:31). He explains that among the ancient Romans, children were sometimes destroyed from the womb in order to avoid the burden of raising them or to continue in selfish desires. For Owen, this was not merely a social evil, but a fearful display of how indwelling sin can darken the conscience, overturn natural love, and rebel against the will of God.

He also links this evil to the Old Testament condemnation of child sacrifice, where children were offered to idols. Though modern abortion may use different language and methods, the underlying reality remains the same: human life, made in the image of God, is sacrificed to human desire, fear, convenience, or false worship.

Owen’s warning is deeply sobering. The same sinful nature that has produced such evils in others also remains within every human heart. Therefore, Donum Dei does not speak from a place of self-righteousness, but from conviction, compassion, and the urgent need for repentance and mercy in Christ.

Our aim is to bear witness to the truth that abortion is sin, that every child is a gift from God, and that forgiveness, cleansing, and new life are found in Jesus Christ.
